The Grappler's Shower Routine: 90 Seconds After the Mats

Two T2 tea tree soap bars with a woven sisal sack and wooden soap dish, Iron Lion Soap

What should a grappler's shower routine look like?

Fast and deliberate: a head-to-toe wash within an hour of training, ninety seconds of lather, clean towel, dry bar, gi in the wash the same day. That is the whole system.

Why the hour? Sweat and mat grime sit on your skin until you wash them off. The sooner the shower, the shorter their stay.

One rule sits above the routine: when something shows up on your skin, a doctor is the call. Full stop. Everything below is about hygiene, the daily kind.

The short version

  • Shower within an hour of stepping off the mats.
  • Ninety seconds of lather beats a two-second rinse. Slow down where the grips happen.
  • Gear gets the same respect as skin: clean towel every session, gi washed the same day.
  • A dry bar in a breathable bag outlasts a wet bar in a zipped pocket by weeks.

The Lion's Den · Mat Series

Mat funk, explained

Funk is earned. Two hundred sweaty grip fights on shared vinyl. The loaner gi. The gym bag that never fully dries. The belt that has never once been washed and wears its history like a trophy.

BJJ, no-gi, wrestling, judo: same loop, same funk. All of it sits on skin and gear until you deal with it. Sweat dries. Grime settles. The bag ripens. Give it a day and your training partners will know before you do.

The fix is boring and it works: a consistent wash routine and gear that dries out between sessions. Grapplers who train for decades run the same loop every single day. It costs ninety seconds and a little discipline.

That loop is where this company comes from. Iron Lion Soap started in 2008 with a jiu-jitsu player, a mat, and a bar built for the job. Eighteen years later the bars are still made the same way: cold-process, all-natural, small batch. The mats taught us everything worth knowing about getting clean.

A grappler's shower routine is ninety seconds: wash within the hour, clean towel, dry bar, gi in the machine the same day.

The Villain

Big Soap doesn't train

That bright drugstore bar is detergent in a soap costume. Sulfates lather big, strip hard, and leave skin tight, dry, and angry. Cocamidopropyl betaine, parabens, and a mystery called “fragrance” fill out the label.

You sweat for every round. Then you hand your skin to chemistry built for a factory and priced for a vending machine.

Read any wrapper in the aisle. If the ingredient list reads like a lab inventory, it was designed for shelf life and margin. Your skin was never in the meeting.

What's actually in T2

Most tea tree on shelves is a blend, cut weak. T2 carries oil from one Australian farm, never diluted. The difference is the bite: a sharp, clean scent and a cool tingle on the skin, first rinse.

Cajeput backs the tea tree up. Parsley powder gives the bar its grit and a cool finish. Cold-process, all-natural, the way every Iron Lion Soap bar has been built since 2008. No sulfates, no parabens, no mystery fragrance.

“It's just soap” misses the point. You use it every single day, on all of you, right after the hardest hour of your day. The ingredient list is the whole product. Want the full label-reading education? Start with what the drugstore bar is hiding, then learn how to make a real bar last.

The post-mat protocol

90 seconds a day, every training day

  1. Shower within the hour. Funk sets like paint; catch it wet.
  2. Ninety seconds of lather, head to toe. Slow down where the grips happen: neck, forearms, hands, feet. That is where the grime concentrates. Between the toes gets its own count.
  3. Clean towel every session. The Tuesday towel does not get a Thursday encore.
  4. Let the bar breathe. A sisal soap saver bag ($4.44) rides in the gym bag, scrubs while you lather, and lets the bar drain and dry between sessions. A wet bar in a sealed pocket melts.
  5. Gi and rash guards go in the wash the same day. Hot water, full cycle, hang to dry. Every session, no exceptions, even for the guy who never washes his belt.
  6. Air the bag out overnight, zippers open. Funk loves a sealed room.

The gym bag loadout

The routine only happens if the kit is already packed. Five things, one small pouch, zero excuses.

A bar in a sisal bag, so it scrubs, drains, and dries on its own. A clean towel, rolled tight. Sandals, because the gym shower floor has seen things. A fresh shirt for the drive home. And a dry pocket for the wet stuff, so the bag itself stays livable.

Travel weeks, competition weekends, open mats across town: same pouch, thrown in whatever bag is going. The routine survives because it never depends on memory.

“I’ve been using Iron Lion Soaps for a few years now, and the T2 is definitely one of my favorite bars. It’s leaves you feeling rejuvenated and super clean, my only issue is I never order enough of them lol.”

Questions grapplers ask

How soon after BJJ training should I shower?

Within the hour, sooner when you can. Sweat and mat grime sit on skin until you wash them off, and funk settles in fast. Make the shower the last rep of practice.

Can a tea tree bar treat ringworm or other skin infections?

No, and walk away from any soap that promises it can. Skin infections need a doctor and real treatment. A daily wash routine is hygiene, and hygiene is worth doing well.

Is a tea tree bar fine for daily showers?

Yes. T2 is built for the daily shower: cold-process, with full-strength tea tree, cajeput, and parsley powder. No sulfates, no synthetic fragrance. Sensitive skin should patch test first: inside of the forearm, 24 hours.

How do I keep a soap bar dry in a gym bag?

A sisal soap saver bag. The bar lives inside, lathers through the weave, then hangs to drain and dry. A sealed container does the opposite: the bar sits in its own puddle and melts a week off its life.

How often should I wash my gi?

After every session, same day. Hot water when the fabric allows it, full cycle, hang to dry. A gi worn twice between washes is a courtesy problem for the whole room.

What makes Iron Lion Soap different from a drugstore bar?

Most drugstore bars are detergent pressed into a bar shape. Iron Lion Soap has made all-natural, cold-process bars since 2008, born in a gym bag and built for people who use their bodies hard.
