Walk the soap aisle. Read one label. Most of what sits there is detergent in a costume: a fragrance load, a chemistry set where the oils should be. The word soap is missing from the package. That's on purpose.

The boutique stuff swings the other way. Fourteen dollars a bar, and half of what you pay for is the box.

Is this real soap?

Yes. Saponified oils and essential oils, cured until they're ready. That is the entire trick.

Why $9.99 when the grocery store sells ten bars for that?

Read the label on the ten-pack. The answer is printed right on it.

How long does a bar last?

On a dish that drains, weeks of daily showers. In a puddle, less. Real soap hates puddles.

Who makes it?

Avi. One man, one pot, one curing rack, since 2008. The batches are small because the room is.
